Testimonies

jonrobertI am a full-time practicing Pediatrician in Hot Spring, Arkansas. I have been a member of medical teams in Honduras and Peru, but since 2006 have been exclusively dedicating my time overseas to Kenya Relief.  I have heretofore never been involved with a group having such an explosive impact upon the health needs of a community.  I have served on three Kenya Relief medical teams and led two more of them.  Kenya is a country ravaged by poverty, hunger, disease, and lack of potable water.  Aids claims thousands of lives annually and Malaria, many more. In the few years since its inception Kenya Relief, has provided potable water to thousands, supplied relief for the hungry, operates an orphanage caring for 116 children, and built a state of the art medical clinic that not only enables General Medical and Pediatric care but now also contains cutting edge operating suites in which cataract, gynecologic, and general surgical cases are being performed.  Steve James is the visionary force behind the organization and the hope generated by what has been done is visible in the eyes of the children and adult patients who have been cared for in the clinic and in the smiles on faces of orphans who now have the security of a home that provides far more than basic needs.  They are loved.  I encourage you to avail yourself of the opportunity to join me in September 2010 or one of the other team leaders if your calendar for September is full.  Join us in alleviating some of the suffering that these beautiful people now needlessly endure.  I have been forever changed by participating in this work and in so doing have received far more than I have given.  Step out of your comfort zone. Experience this, yourself.   You can have a measurable impact in Kenya

Dr. Jon Robert; Pediatrician, Hot Springs Arkansas.

An amazing experience. Our team arrived late in evening from Nairobi to Migori. We were greeted by the children, who were living in the orphanage home. All well dressed and full of love and were happy. The caregivers were totally dedicated to the well being of the children.
We all stayed in the same compound. It was truly an atmosphere of retreat.
Our surgical / medical team faced up with anther great welcome by large group of patients and staff upon arrival into the Clinic/ hospital across the road at 7:30 the next morning. Our team were first to do women care and gynecologic surgeries.
It was a rewarding work. Full of emotion, respect and observing the kindness of staff and reciprocation by kind smile of Kenyan patents.
Africa is magical. Their natives be it Tanzania where I summit Kilimanjaro mtn, or Kenyans where we did medical mission, are respectful, welcoming and appreciative and above all happy.
For little I did during my mission in Kenya, I received an immense sense of gratification in return. When I returned to Nairobi airport, I even received phone calls from patients as they expressed their appreciation and thank all of us for the medical work we have done. We were blessed.

My wife and I wanted to do a mission together for some time.  She had been on one in the past to Cambodia setting up an orphanage.  I had never been on one before.  We were looking for one where we could go  back to the same area and see how our past work had benefitted the people and see how the mission has progressed.  I have been a CRNA since 1995 and was ready for a challenge.  Where I work I have to put in for vacations a year ahead of time.  I received an email from a fellow CRNA that Steve James was looking for a CRNA for a mission trip to Kenya, I just so happened to have the time off.  I read the story of how the mission had come about and new that this was meant to be.  My wife is an RN and had experience in OB and was able to go as well.  I wasn't sure how things would go or what to expect.  We put in long clinic days and Steve and I set up and gave the anesthesia for the first "surgical cases" (other than cataracts) at the clinic.  I pulled from my past experiences and had God by my side throughout the experience.  It moved me in ways I can't describe.  I left there planning the next time I wanted to go back.  The surgeons I worked with were great.  The Kenya people were wonderful.  To me this was a pivotal point in my life, it took me to a different point in my relationship with God.  I plan to go back in 2011 with my daughter if able.  This is an experience I don't want her to miss

God Bless, John Masserant CRNA.   Saline, MI
